Last Friday, the Department of Labor reported that another 180,000 Americans left the coffee shops and found jobs during the month of March, with another 32,000 jobs added to prior month's reports. The Unemployment Rate dropped to 4.4%, matching the lowest rate in six years - and Average Hourly Earnings were up as well, rising to $17.22 per hour. |

Capital Metro returned in 2004 with a scaled-back plan of 32 miles of commuter rail, using existing track rather than new. They also took the starting point of the line and moved it from Howard Lane, in Northwest Austin, north to the city of Leander. This plan, known as All Systems Go, passed with nearly 62 percent voter approval. |

The Texas X Park- the multifaceted recreational complex that could make Leander a major destination--has received an environmental permit from the U.S. Corps of Engineers. The permit was the last hurdle the project needed to secure its funding, paving the way for a groundbreaking on the $18 million first phase later this summer. |

Austins unemployment rate went down from 4.5 percent a year ago to 3.8 percent in February 2007. According to the Texas Workforce Commission, 808,000 people were employed in the Austin-Round Rock area in February, compared with 816,600 in February 2006. |

Area builders started 3,327 homes in the first quarter, down from 4,613 a year ago, according to Dallas-based Residential Strategies Inc., which tracks new-home activity. At the same time, builders sold more new homes, up 4.3 percent from the same quarter last year. And the median price rose 9.3 percent to $204,443 from the year-ago period. |

At least that is what some fear, as accountants begin to make projections for the fiscal year. A restructured business or franchise tax was designed to fund the property tax relief. However, John Clements, a certified public accountant with Greg Salley and Associates, believes the changes may cost smaller companies more than they can afford, which could translate into more expensive products and services. |
