The Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authoritys board of directors approved a contract to build the South Central Transit Center, which is part of the All Systems Go Long-Range Transit Plan.
The new $4.3 million transit center is planned for the intersection of South Congress Avenue and Ben White Boulevard. Construction will begin in mid-May and completion is expected in August 2008. Journeyman Construction will build the new center.
The center is meant to serve as a central point for east-west and north-south routes, including one of Cap Metros busiest routes, the 1L/1M North Lamar/South Congress bus route, Capital Metro President and CEO Fred Gilliam says.
The transit center will have 13 dedicated bus bays and is designed to accommodate future rapid bus service. It will feature covered walkways, a central promenade with shade trees, covered bicycle parking, a clock tower reminiscent of the moon towers around Austin, and space for future food-service vendors.
The board also approved a $962,444 contract with Smith Contracting to add turn lanes and a traffic signal onto Radam Lane, which will serve as the main entrance to the new facility.
The South Central Transit Center is the next major milestone in the All Systems Go Long-Range Transit Plan, says Gilliam. Our expanded services in South Austin will improve both connectivity and customer service to meet the current and future needs of our rapidly growing region. The long-range plan includes Capital MetroRail service, rapid bus service, expanded local and express bus routes, new park and ride locations, and possible expanded future rail service in Central Texas.
